Event Details
Join us for the official record release show for IROIRO’s self-titled debut full-length, out on K Records/Grand Ultra, at The Eleanor Room. Select Level will be opening the night.
IROIRO is the latest project of IQU’s Michiko Swiggs and Kento Oiwa, joined by bassist James Drage (Sil2K) and Justin Schwartz (Cobra High). The four-piece channels man-machine rhythms and free-noise improvisation into extended, vocal-free psychedelic rock jams, already establishing them as one of Seattle’s most exciting live bands,
Select Level is led by Seattle multi-instrumentalist Andy Sells — drummer for Afrocop and formerly of electronic outfit FCS North — is joined by Noel Brass Jr. (Afrocop) on keys and Morgan Dixon (Spesh) on drums. The band’s signature style blends elements of disco, post-punk, funk, electro, and Afrobeat, anchoring each track with hooky basslines and raw, gritty drums.
About IROIRO
It only took a few gigs for IROIRO to establish themselves as Seattle’s most exciting rock group. This may surprise fans of IQU, whose Michiko Swiggs and Kento Oiwa form IROIRO’s creative core. Whereas IQU combined samples and live instrumentation to put playful spins on electronic music, IROIRO produce extended, vocal-free jams that blossom into powerful psychedelic rock. You can hear the band’s splendid evolution on their self-titled debut LP.
In the aftermath of early-’20s IQU reunion gigs and the disbanding of synthesist Swiggs and drummer Justin Schwartz’s electronic unit Zazaz, they asked Oiwa to join them in a new project. Kento—who’d been involved in solo improv project Malaise—agreed. Along with newly added bassist James Drage, they assembled for jam sessions at which the trio combined Zazaz’s “man-machine methods” and Malaise’s spontaneous noise excursions. The resulting music will convince you that rock still has ingenuity to burn.
About Select Level
Heads may know Select Level mastermind Andy Sells best as the limber drummer for soulful fusion explorers Afrocop or as the bassist for noisy prog-rockers Nosretep… or maybe even for his stint in electronic brainiacs FCS North, who existed from 1997 to 2007. This talented Seattle multi-instrumentalist has established that he can get weird and far out in various situations. Select Level finds Sells veering off on a tangent into the realm of sleek music geared for dancing and romancing. Andy is joined by Noel Brass Jr. (Afrocop) on keys and Morgan Dixon (Spesh) on drums.
